A Sophisticated Notion

Hello Ladies,

If you saw our fashion previews this past week, you know gorgeous high waisted underwear is a huge trend for most manufacturers with designs subtly nodding to vintage femininity while still providing comfort and even moderate smoothing for everyday wear.  Thongs and low-rise hipsters are being swapped out for designs with a less daring rise and more coverage.  For example, the muted pink and satin sheen of the Parfait Danielle blends perfectly with the ivory lace to create a set that feels worthy of the silver screen:

Or, who could forget that muted gray roses and soft accents on the Fantasie Delilah?

Because high waisted underwear sits closer to your natural waist, they can alleviate the dreaded muffin-top that lower rise styles create, and many of them have built-in smoothing panels to slim the midsection.   What’s not to love?

Well, for starters, if you’re picking out a sexy set you hope to share with that special someone, you may be accused of wearing “granny panties.”  Yes, I went there ladies.  After showing the new catalogs to some male friends and family, I was shocked at how the sets I loved were dismissed as too matronly because of the higher waist on the underwear.  “But, it’s sexy and reminds me of Dita Von Teese!”

“No, it’s just a dressed up form of granny panties,” one male countered.  The design was also questioned by men and women alike if you had less than a model’s physique.  Furthermore, as one female customer noted, women with a tummy may not achieve the same look and would be sexier in a more traditional brief that showed some skin.

As a firmer believer and supporter of lingerie for lingerie’s sake, i.e., buy it for yourself since you are the one that has to wear it, I tend to feel like the male objection shouldn’t be enough to dissuade you.  However, many women do buy sexier sets to surprise their significant others, so my questions to you are:  How do you feel about the high waist trend? Do you feel like it’s body specific?  And would you buy it if your significant other said it was just glorified granny panties?

Personally, I do love the high waist trend, but I feel like it won’t work well for all body types.  I was considering purchasing a high waist swimsuit bottom earlier this year, and on my curvy lower half, the front was fabulous.  Fabulous!  From the back?  Eh, not so much.  While I love it, I don’t think I would personally participate and will stick to my shorts/briefs instead.
